How Acupuncture Can Help Regulate Menstruation

Do you suffer from painful or irregular menstrual cycles? Are you currently going through menopause? Are you pregnant or trying to conceive?

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can benefit your health and help you navigate these uncomfortable or anxiety provoking phases of life (or the month).

Over the next couple of months, we will be publishing blog posts that explore the ways in which Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can benefit women’s health and wellness. This week, we’ll be looking at the building block of women’s health: menstrual cycles.

Menstruation is a regular part of a woman’s hormonal cycle from the ages of 14 – 50. It should occur every 26-32 days and be about 4-6 days in length. The bleeding should be moderate in amount, the color should be bright red, and there shouldn’t be any clots, pain, cravings, or breast tenderness that accompany the cycle. Western medicine often accepts these latter symptoms as ‘normal’ or attempts to treat them with hormones that don’t address the underlying cause.

Hormonal birth control masks symptoms by introducing a balanced level of estrogen and progesterone into the body, but because these hormones are externally derived they do not actually address underlying cause of the hormonal imbalance.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, on the other hand, use evidence based research to address the root of menstrual irregularities by regulating the endocrine system itself. Acupuncture soothes overactive endocrine glands and kick starts those that have fallen behind.  Many women who try acupuncture to relieve their cramps, cravings, or breast tenderness see results within a few months of treatment and the results are long-lasting—even after they’ve finished with treatment.

Irregular cycles and amenorrhea (lack of menstrual cycles) can also be addressed with acupuncture and herbal medicine. Stress, excessive exercise, and poor eating habits are often contributing factors to these more advanced menstrual irregularities, but lifestyle changes in conjunction with alternative medicine can bring cycles back into regularity. Some women have even experienced their cycles returning while they lie on the treatment table!
